Meet The Team

Scientific Director
FABIO FABIANI
Fabio Fabiani is Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Pisa, Associate Researcher at the CNR-ISMA, and Honorary Member of the Italian Archaeological School of Carthage.
His research focuses on urbanism, architecture, and geoarchaeology, with particular attention to the reconstruction of ancient landscapes.
He directs excavations in Italy and Tunisia and leads research projects including the Pisa Progetto Suburbio, dedicated to the investigation of the settlement patterns and productive activities of the Roman city’s suburbium, and excavations at the Central Baths on the acropolis of Populonia.

Field Director
STEFANO GENOVESI
Stefano Genovesi is a Classical Archaeologist with a PhD in Ancient History.
From 2020 to 2022, he was Research Fellow at the University of Pisa, where he focused on suburbia in the Roman world.
In 2024 he was Research Fellow at the University of Naples Federico II, investigating centres of power between Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages.
He is a member of the Pisa Progetto Suburbio, dedicated to the study of suburban spaces in Roman Pisa, and serves as Scientific Director of the Carrara Marble Museum and the Archaeological site of Fossacava (Carrara).
Within the ArcheoPopulonia project, he is in charge of conducting the field activities.

Field supervisor
ALBERTO CAROTI
Alberto Caroti, PhD student in the Heritage Science programme at Sapienza University of Rome, Subject Expert in Urban Planning and in Greek and Roman Architecture at the University of Pisa and PhD student associate at the CNR-ISMA.
His research interests range from the analysis of Roman-period landscapes to the development of three-dimensional reconstructions aimed at both research interpretation and public dissemination.
He is a member of the Pisa Progetto Suburbio, dedicated to the study of suburban spaces in Roman Pisa.
Within the ArcheoPopulonia project, he is in charge of conducting the archaeological survey activities.

Field supervisor
LUCA FILONI
Luca Filoni is an archaeologist specializing in the study of ancient architecture, with particular attention to building materials and construction techniques, analysed from a historical-economic perspective and with the support of archaeometric methods.
His research focuses on the processes of formation and transformation of public and private architecture, as well as urban planning, in the Archaic and Classical periods in Magna Graecia.
He has taken part in numerous archaeological excavation campaigns in Italy and in national projects concerning ancient architecture in northern Italy.
He is also involved in activities for the protection of the archaeological heritage for the Ministry of Culture.

Field supervisor
DIEGO VALENTI
Diego Valenti is a postgraduate student in Archaeological Heritage at the University of Pisa, specializing in the study of Roman urban planning.
He has been working in the field for a year as a professional archaeologist in Tuscany and Emilia Romagna. His master’s thesis focuses on the use of bardiglio marble from Luni in Roman-era theaters in Italy and the western provinces. His postgraduate specialization thesis will address the construction phases of the Central Baths complex in Populonia.
He is a member of the Suburbio Pisa Project, dedicated to the study of suburban spaces in Roman Pisa. Within the ArcheoPopulonia Project, he serves as field supervisor and coordinator.

Summer school Field advisor
ANNA LONGONI
Anna Longoni is a master’s student in Urbanism and Classical World Architecture, writing a thesis on the units of measurement used on the Acropolis of Populonia and on the movements of skilled workers across sites.
She also works in underwater archaeology and has taken part in projects under the Italian Ministry of Culture, including the recovery of cargo from an early archaic shipwreck in the deep waters of the Otranto Channel.
She is a member of the ArcheoPopulonia project and serves as field advisor for its Summer School.

Documentation manager
AGNESE RAMAGINI
Agnese Ramagini is a student in the Master's program in Classical Archaeology at the University of Pisa. She worked on a bachelor's thesis dedicated to Roman age labra in bardiglio marble from the Archaeological site of Fossacava (Carrara), and actively participated in the ArcheoPopulonia UNIPI Project as documentation manager. She is currently interested in the study of structural-style wall plasters from the calidarium of the Central Baths on the acropolis of Populonia.
